Some annoucements from SRC

Dear all,

Here are a few quick announcements!

1. New printers have arrived! You can collect your personal pin number for the printer from MPH 6 or you can ask the IT Department where to collect it from. These printers are outsourced (to outsource means to obtain goods or services from an outside supplier; to contract work out.) and because it is a MYR 2 million ringgit project meant for both BJ and Seremban it had taken a while to get everything settled. I will be emailing soon about what students can get from the printers and the official pricing of printing.

2. There are now two more PCs in the Student Lounge for students to use. Just a reminder: please switch off the PC once you are done and no one else is using it. Please make sure that even the switches are off because otherwise they are left on overnight and it is a waste of electricity.

3. We are working on fixing the gym equipment with the assistance of the Gym Club and SSD. We hope students can be slightly patient with us on this as we need to evaluate which equipment is not working and then get it fixed.

** ATTENTION!

Hey guys,

Recently, I find out that in several blogs of others batches in our uni have posted something regarding "IMU student email account"in their blogs. (source: BP108 &ME208 Blogs).

This thing might be applicable for us as well.

According to their blogs, they states that :-

"All end of semester examination results will be sent to students' IMU email address. We will no longer send results to student's personal email address."

Thus in order to activate the account, u guys have to assess to http://mail.imu.edu.my/ .
sign in with your ID and password is 123456.

You guys can change ur password once you have logged in.

This link will give u a better understanding on how to activate ur account.
http://its.imu.edu.my/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=49&Itemid=56.

I am NOT SURE whether this message is applicable to us or not , maybe Kin Man can help us clarify this. Thanks. :)

9 WORDS WOMEN USE

(1) Fine: This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up.

(2) Five Minutes: If she is getting dressed, this means a half an hour. Five minutes is only five minutes if you have just been given five more minutes to watch the game before helping around the house.

(3) Nothing: This is the calm before the storm. This means something, and you should be on your toes. Arguments that begin with nothing usually end in fine.

(4) Go Ahead: This is a dare, not permission. Don't Do It!

(5) Loud Sigh: This is actually a word, but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A loud sigh means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you about nothing. (Refer back to # 3 for the meaning of nothing.)

(6) That's Okay: This is one of the most dangerous statements a women can make to a man. That's okay means she wants to think long and hard before deciding how and when you will pay for your mistake.

(7) Thanks: A woman is thanking you, do not question, or Faint. Just say you're welcome. (I want to add in a clause here - This is true, unless she says 'Thanks a lot' - that is PURE sarcasm and she is not thanking you at all. DO NOT say 'you're welcome' ... that will bring on a 'whatever').

(8) Whatever: Is a women's way of saying F*** YOU!

(9) Don't worry about it, I got it: Another dangerous statement, meaning this is something that a woman has told a man to do several times, but is now doing it herself. This will later result in a man asking 'What's wrong?' For the woman's response refer to # 3.

Dangerous dangerous dangerous!!!!

Halloween Night 2009

In 2007 IMU adopted Kampung Orang Asli Serendah as one of it's homes for it's Community and Social Responsibility Programme.

One of the challenges faced by the Orang Asli there is unclean water. Without proper water supply, the residents are vulnerable to many water-borne illnesses. The idea of raising funds is to be able to provide them with a manual water pump. Each pump (+ installation of the pump) costs about RM 2500, and we hope to raise enough money for at least one (or more) pump(s). This will enable the residents to have a supply of properly sanitized water and reduce the number of residents with water-borne illnesses.

And so in order to raise funds for the water pump(s), SRC Bukit Jalil will be hosting a Halloween Night celebration and you're invited!

Tickets can be purchased from any of the Vice-Presidents and are for only RM 12!

If you are planning to bring people outside of IMU you will need to provide us with their:

* Name
* IC/Passport Number
* Handphone number

For any other enquiries please e-mail imusrc@gmail.com.

We hope to see you there! :)

Log Book Q5 & Q6

Hi. Here are some converstations in the interview and I think that they might be helpful in answering question 5 and 6.
Question 5:
"Q. Can you describe your company’s storage facility and storage conditions?
A. Poisons are kept in a cage under a lock system with the key held by the pharmacist. Other drugs are kept in normal designated areas. For raw materials and blister packaging materials such as aluminium foil, storage temperature is 23 ± 2°C with relative humidty of below 50%. Relative humidity is monitored daily with a hygrometer. Other packaging materials such as bottles can be stored at room temperature. "
Question 6:
"Q. Does Innovax utilize documents such as invoices, indents and GRN?
A. Most of their material is sourced from their subsidiaries thus they only need to purchase API’s from outside. Hence, invoices are only used for purchase of API’s. Invoices are managed by the administration. GRN is seldom used as it is more for the production side."
*What is GRN? (goods return note)

•GRN is being used to record all stocks or inventory returned to the suppliers especially damaged or wrongly delivered Goods
•Any damaged or wrongly delivered goods be received, the supplier should be notified immediately and agreement reached as to whether the stores are willing to receive a short order, the process necessary to get the damaged or wrongly delivered goods returned and arrange for the required items to be supplied.
•All messages or conversations with the supplier or his carrier regarding this matter should be noted on the relevant GRN as a record. On occasions any agreements reached may need to be put in writing and a copy of the letter filed appropriately.
•If further goods are expected the GRN should be placed in an incomplete order file to await further deliveries to complete the order.

Pharmaceutics Log Book Questions 1 and 2

1 . Describe the interrelation between preformulation and formulation process.

( Refer to aulton page 137)
- Preformulation stages are denoted as dotted boxes while formulation stages are solid boxes.
- In order to develop three of these dosage forms, tablets, capsules and injections, it is necessary to have the fundamental physical and chemical properties of the drug molecule and other derived properties of the drug powder are obtained.
- This information is essential to dictate many of the forthcoming events and approaches in formulation development.

2. Enumerate the importance of salt formation and crystallization of active pharmaceutical ingredients in pre-formulation studies.

- Major improvement in solubility can be achieved by salt formation.
- Preferably salts should be prepared from weak acid or base to prevent instability in tablet or capsule formation as more hygroscopic drugs tend to dissolved in its own adsorbed films of moisture.
- Less soluble salts tend to be less hygroscopic and form less acidic or basic solution which is useful in injection formulation.
- The pH of injection should be in between 3-9 to prevent vessel or tissue damage and pain at injection site. Furthermore, oral syrups should not be too acidic to make it more palatability.

- A weak base tends to be freely soluble in the gastrointestinal tract with no absorption seen as the drug is in ionized forms and absorption delayed until the intestine and vice versa for weak acid.
- Unlike weak base or acid, formation of salt allows better control of the pH of diffusion layer.
- This is an advantage as the diffusion layer acts as a buffering agent that adjusts the pH of the drug according to its environment in. Thus maximize the dissolution rate. Plus the dissolution rate of salt is usually greater than parent drug.

Organ Donation Talk‏

Dear All,

Speaker : Mr Lee Chen Hoe
Topic : Organ donation
Venue : IMU LT3
Time : Friday 9 October 2009. 10:30AM to 11:15AM

There will be organ donation forms for those who wish to pledge to be donors.

Mr Lee was on dialysis for 5 years before getting a kidney transplant on 27 July 1996. The kidney was donated by the family of an American who was working in KL and died of a stroke. Mr Lee is the secretary of the Green Ribbon Support Association, which is a support group for organ transplant recipients. He is extremely active in the community by giving talks on organ donation.

Some Possible objections to donation organ are

1. doctors won't save me if I am in a medical emergency they know I am a donor
2. my religion is against organ donation
3. organs donated go to rich patients
4. I may not be dead before my organs are removed for transplant.

Are there any basis to these -- and many other -- objections ?

Please attend the talk.

Logbook ques. 9 & 10

This is from group 6

9.What is the importance of Batch Manufacturing Record (BMR) in injectables production and Quality Control (QC)?

Ans: Traceability in case of any error or problems.

10. List any one evaluation method of injectables you have observed

Ans: Pls refer notes from last sem. Eg: LAL test, clarity test, etc.

Ans from Pharmacist interviewed.

Logbook Ques. 3&4

Hey, hereby come with the points for Question 3 & 4 from my group (Group 2).

Question 3:
The basic considerations:
- Mixing devices, like homogenizers, high-speed stirrer, for oil and waer phases of emulsion
- Packaging of IV emulasion in the infusion bottles: purging of nitrogen gas into the bottles while capping
- Sterility maintenance: use of autoclave sterilization
- Particle size uniformity because presence of droplet size > 5 micrometers leads to embolism in the blood vessels.

Question 4:

•The weight sheet:
- clearly identifies the chemicals required in a batch.
- presents the chemicals in the quantities and the order in which they will be used
- prevents confusion the names and identifying numbers for the ingredients should be used on batch records.

•Precise and explicir process directions are given.
•Batch record provides:
1.Processing details
2.Sampling directions
3. In-process specifications
4. Finished product specifications
5. Countersignatures

•Various specifications like addition rates, mixing time, mixing speed, heating, and cooling rates, temperature, storing of the finished product samples are mentioned in the batch record directions.
•A manufacturing procedure is written by the actual operator with current knowledge and experience.

P/S: Answers asked from group supervisor =P

Photography Club

We are expanding the Photography Club in IMU by attempting to cover every event by other clubs while providing training and teaching about photography at the same time.
In another words,
We are providing free training for those who wishes to learn the basic and gain understanding for photography and it's techniques.
The training would consist of coverage of an event (IMU) while partnering with another student who is experienced in using DSLR.
For those who DOES NOT own a DSLR and still wishes to learn, we, the Photography Club can lend you one, free of charge.
Most importantly, we're giving the chance to use and to learn photography to anyone who is interested.

Guidelines to borrowing First Aid Kits

Dear all,

Below is the new Guidelines to borrowing First Aid Kits, issued by the First Aid Club.

Please remember that the emergency cases should really be emergencies and not just because they forgot to apply for it.

GUIDELINES TO BORROWING FIRST AID KITS

In lieu of recent happenings, the first aid club has decided to keep some of the kits due to irresponsible borrowing.

1) We will keep 3 kits (K1, K2, and K3). These are fully stocked kits. To borrow these kits for ANY EVENTS, you will have to

a) Apply for them 2 days prior to the event. The application form can be obtained from Aznah, in the SSD Department OR from the SRC.

b) Once filled, please return the forms to Aznah.

We will process the forms and hand out the kits personally to you.

2) However, in cases of EMERGENCY, there will be 2 other kits in the SAD Store Room. These kits are stocked with the bare necessities for any emergency cases. To borrow these kits, you have to

a) Inform Aznah.

b) Write down your details in this Log Book.

c) As soon as the emergency is dealt with, RETURN THE KITS.

We are very sorry for the inconveniences caused, but this is the only way where we can accurately track down the kits, and their borrowers.

Any inquiries should be directed to: imufirstaidclub@gmail.com

more on the wonders of google..

Hey..just sharing a tip from my friend on how to use Google Maps (especially for those of us who have been assigned to community pharmacies which are far away)

1. Go to Google Maps

2. Click on "Get Directions"

and you will come to this page:

3. Type in the location (from where you're coming from & your destination)

A: International Medical University, Jalan Barat, Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (where you are coming from)

B: Jalan Besar, 42200 Kapar, Selangor, Malaysia (destination: mine is Alychem pharmacy in Klang)

and you'll get the directions! (only directions for driving and walking are available)

Eg.

the detailed directions are on the left side of the page, and the blue line on the map shows the direction.

=)

P/s: does anyone know how to get to

farmasi alychem
no. 40, jalan besar kapar
42200 pekan kapar
klang

by public transport? (not by taxi =P)

thanks =)

About the tie... (again)

Here are several designs. Before you vote, please click on the design to see an enlarged version...(some of the design on the tie is not clear here) Please see carefully as this will be the final design... Please vote:

Left tie - (1)
Right tie - (2)

Left - (3)
Right - (4)

Left - (5)
Right - (6)

Right - (7)
Left is the design for scarf.(no flat tie designs)

Regarding the scarf..
Its not as simple to design as a tie.. and its rather difficult to make big changes to the design.. and and... it will cost a bomb too as they will have to make a bigger template for the scarf..

Regarding the tie design:
It might not be clear here, but all the designs for the black ties would have a most distinctive and clearer background.

So anyway.. i'll set a poll to see how many of you all still want the scarf and what design for the tie would you all want.
**IMPORTANT! -- ONLY VOTE FOR THE TIE IF YOU INTEND TO BUY IT

Ps: the tie is also applicable for girls who want it. Its more or less compulsory for guys to buy it.

Tie design - update

Ok.. so we back to the topic we were discussing some time ago. The design for the tie is out. So i'd just wanna know your opinion about it. So PLEASE-PLEASE-PLEASAE-PLEASE comment. It'll be great if you ppl could also tell your opinion about the current design or how to improve it. But the very very very least you could do is say "i like it" or "i dont like it". Also indicate which would you prefer.. black or white?

(please let me know if the pic is not clear.. coz i resized the original 3mb image file)

and regarding the scarf for the ladies.. it'll be designed once the tie design has been finalised.

Ketam dogs for immediate adoption

AnimalCare and the Subang Jaya Buddhist Association had funded the medical treatment (and provided other needs) of the first 14 dogs rescued by SPCA from the dreaded Pulau Selat Kering. The dogs are now in good health, most of them are sociable, and 6 have already been spayed. The rest will be spayed very soon.

We have to see to the "final" wellbeing of these dogs now, and that is to get them rehomed.

Please click here to view photos of the dogs.

We would appreciate very much if you could also help us pass the word around that these dogs need a home. Please feel free to post this message in your own blogs and websites.

Those interested in adopting the dogs, kindly proceed to SPCA to arrange for immediate adoption. We hope to get all the dogs adopted by mid-August.

These dogs have literally been through "hell" and have survived. They deserve a good and loving home now. Please help.

Thank you very much.

Designing the tie..

For the tie to be designed, we would need symbols, pictures, logos and whatever that is related with pharmacy and b107. so if any1 has anything at all.. anything, and i mean just about anything in the world that crossed ur mind, please send me the image or let me know whats in ur mind.. then we can give this whole collection of images, logos, whatever to the designer for him to see what's suitable =)

I'll be sending in materials for the design this weekend. so if you all are free, please help out to search for pharmacy and b107 related stuff this weekend. thx

A tie for the guy and something else for the gals

Hey.. so.. back to that tie idea that we talked about during the holidays. My tie shop says they might be able to sell at a price of RM30+ per tie. But if we were to get from them, then there will be several problems:

1. Unable to come out with a design that EVERY1 is happy with. We cant go with anonymous's design, coz if we have 1 design for guys, another design for girls, then it'll be ordering 2 sets of bulk ties.. this is gonna cost a huge bomb.

2. Not all the girls are happy with the idea of a tie since most if not all of them dont exactly wear ties. So they'll be kinda left out in this.. which would then make the whole idea of having a B107 identity pointless.

So heres another idea.. We get David's cousin to design something for us (its not free, but it'll just be an extra 1 or 2 bucks if many people are interested). Then with the same design, we make a tie for the guys, and a scarf for the girls. Is that ok with the girls? I think that the scarf is a nice idea that any1 can wear around.. and furthermore lt3 can be kinda cold.. so its functional too !!
And if you people agree with this idea, then we can totally screw MyTieShop and let david's cousin handle everything

So.. what do you people think? it'll be nice to hear comments from every1 =)

Some Annoucements from SRC

Info Day Payment
The payment for volunteers who helped out during Info Day is now ready. Please collect it in the SRC Office from Nirmal (Secretary).

Hilltop Carpark Tarring
We are currently negotiating with the administration to have our hilltop carpark tarred. It will be properly painted to maximize space. However, it will not be sheltered. We have put up a poll on our blog ( imusrc.blogspot.com) to find out how much students are willing to pay for it per day. The closing date for the poll is 24th of July 2009. We will use the results from the poll to discuss with the administration. Should you have any suggestions/comments, kindly head over to imucampus.com.

Malaysian Studies Project

We've settled for the 27th & 28th of August for our Malaysian Studies Project. I don't know if you've heard anything about it but we're organising the event with regards to Merdeka day. Our theme is 'Down Memory lane', so basically we're focusing on the achievements of our country & what has happened since independence.

Even though this is a Malaysian Studies project, I would really appreciate it if the whole class would get involve, even though you're not taking the subject, because what ever we earn from this project, we're going to use it for our Convo Mag...and also, let's take this time to get to know one another better..mari kita ber-'bonding-bonding' =)

So, if you would like to help out in anything, please let myself (Natalie) or David know...or any ideas that you would like to contribute, please do let us know.

And another thing is I would like help on making posters for the exhibition.

On behalf of my committee, I would like to extend my gratitude for your cooperation in this project. Thank you!!

Love,
Natalie

Some annoucements from SRC

(these are emails from SRC)

1) Dialogue Session with Dr. Mahathir

There will be a dialogue session with YABhg Tun Mahathir Mohammad on 7 July 2009, 9:30 a.m. The theme is "Leadership in Medicine & contribution to Nation Building".

We need an estimated 130 students from all the courses in IMU Bukit Jalil to attend the session as this is a very beneficial talk. However, if the response is overwhelming, more seat will be opened to more students. Those who are attending the talk will either be exempted from the class (if they have) or the class itself will be canceled.

We also need 5 questions from students to be forwarded during Q & A sessions and please kindly identify 5 students that will voice out the question. Please prepare the question by the 29th of June.

So overall we need at least 15 or more people from each batch.

2) Please approach SRC if you are interested in giving tuition to a form 6 student in physics and chemistry. The student stays in Happy Garden and prefers home tuition.
